Sugar Beach Resort hotel review written by Travel Writer & Photographer Linda Jackson

Set in a lush St Lucia rainforest, this luxury Sugar Beach Resort boutique hotel (a Viceroy Resort) offers privacy in secluded chic villas with private plunge pools, luxury Sugar Mill Rooms and luxury beachside bungalows. Sugar Beach is a romantic hotel ideal for Caribbean honeymoons and a discrete exclusive Caribbean hideaway

Perched on a steep hillside on the mountainous Caribbean island of St Lucia is where you will find the luxury chic accommodation (luxury villas, luxury Sugar Mill rooms, luxury beachfront bungalows) at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, surrounded by a dense rainforest. Nestling in a World Heritage Site, the 100-acre-plus rainforest setting is stunning as the intimate plantation resort sits between St Lucia’s famous Pitons: two dramatic and scenic volcanic plugs (Gros Piton is 771 metres high and Petit Piton is 743 metres high).

Sugar Beach Resort luxury villas with private pool

The cool white villas in this luxuriously stylish intimate Sugar Beach Resort are architecturally individual, many enjoying lovely views, and each having a private plunge pool is absolute bliss on a hot steamy day. Most of the villas are scattered around the hillside away from the beach area, restaurants and bars, but there is a mini-bus service so that’s not a problem. Unless you are pretty fit you will need to use the mini-bus as the road to the villas is steep and it’s a hot steamy trek to the very top villas. But, as the food is superlative at Sugar Beach, daily walking up and down to your villa can burn off tons of calories – it’s a great way to keep fit and also see colourful hummingbirds en route – we loved walking every day.

Romantic Caribbean honeymoon hotel

Individually-designed luxury villas are dotted around the hillside; they are gorgeous with dark wooden floors and all-white chic interiors, with outside wooden decks, comfortable terrace furniture, and a private plunge pool to each villa. It would be easy to spend your whole vacation hiding away in the villa – wonderful – just the sights and the sounds of the rainforest within touching distance, coupled with your own pool and terrace(s) is absolute bliss. Plenty of books and a good supply of champagne, that’s all you need. Perfect, idyllic, must-do.

Sugar Beach Resort boasts chic bars and fine dining

In this very tropical natural rainforest setting, the air-conditioned funky contemporary Late Night Bar and Cane Bar coms as a surprise: they are very chic London/New York style. You’ll find afternoon tea served in the Palm Court Lounge (lovely views from the terrace); fine dining by candlelight in the Great Room restaurant which oozes Old World colonial charm (book in advance for a romantic table setting on the balcony – it’s very popular); and, for more casual beachside surroundings yards from the sea, enjoy snacks and cocktails in the Bayside Bar. Romantic dinners can be arranged on a private stretch of beach, on the Sunset Deck or pier, or on your private villa terrace.

Stunning treehouse Rainforest Spa at Sugar Beach Resort

The Rainforest Spa is unusual, quite stunning, accessed via wooden walkways, and hidden amongst the towering trees in the rainforest: the individual elevated treehouse treatment rooms, reached via wooden walkways, feature thatched roofs and outside bamboo showers. Such an unusual and relaxing setting in which to be pampered while listening to the sounds of the rainforest.

Activities on site and/or nearby – supplement applies for some activities

On-site at the Sugar Beach Resort there are free-of-charge use of kayaks (1 and 2-seater), paddleboats (2 and 4-seater), paddleboards, Hobie cats, and windsurfing boards. A wide range of fitness classes are available (including Yoga, Pilates, Zumba) as well as personal training and private classes. There is a charge for a two-hour kayaking trip to the Coral Garden Reef (time for snorkelling), and there is a PADI Dive Centre from which you’ll have access to the protected underwater park and National Marine Reserve, just yards away. Snuba, diving, wake boarding and tubing is also available. Off-site guided hikes (rainforest, waterfalls, Pitons), sea tours (fishing, whale watching), and adventure tours (ziplining, ATV, biking) can be arranged via the resort. Special comments on Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, from the Editor of Active Caribbean

Choose one of the villas higher up the hillside if you want to be away from it all – accommodation is idyllic for honeymooners. The Sugar Mill rooms are lovely too – they are at the bottom of the hill near the small beach, within yards of the cocktail bars and restaurants. The beach is small and sheltered; there are longer sand beaches on the island… however, the rainforest setting, view of the Pitons, chic accommodation, private plunge pool, fine dining, and stylish bars will be hard to beat. This luxury St Lucia resort is secluded and exclusive and will undoubtedly appeal to VIPs and celebrities wanting a tranquil hideaway to chillax, de-stress or escape the limelight for a while (actor Matt Damon hired the whole resort to renew his vows with his wife).
