Cayman Islands wildlife
Cayman Islands wildlife on land is quite limited but the marine life is prolific around the islands. Grand Cayman is famous for its blue ‘dragon. This Blue Iguana is critically endangered but the controlled-release programme on Grand Cayman is proving a great success. There are around 60 butterfly species (including the Cayman Pygmy Blue), nine bat species, soldier crabs, green iguanas, agoutis, hickatees (fresh water turtle variety), harmless snakes (quite rare).
Marine Life of the Cayman Islands
The marine life is prolific around the Cayman Islands. There are Reef fish, sharks, sea turtles, barracudas, Cuban dogfish, a variety of sharks (gulper, catshark, sharp nosed seven-gilled, big-eyed six-gilled), stingrays (southern, electric, yellow, nurse), parrotfish, Spanish hogfish, Nassau groupers, Moray eels, squirrelfish, angelfish, basslets, coral shrimps.
Birdwatching & Cayman Islands birds
The Cayman Islands are a stopping off point during the migration season. More than 200 different species of bird, including migratory birds, have been recorded in the Cayman Islands. Around 50 bird species are resident. With the aim of giving you just an idea of the variety of birds that can be seen in the Cayman Islands, and not a full list by any means, birds include the Yellow bellied sapsucker, indigo bunting, Warbler (more than 24 species), Cayman parrot, Cayman Brac parrot, Caribbean dove, brown boobies, red footed boobies, seabirds, waders, plovers, herons, egrets, kingfisher, terns, fly catchers, purple gallinules, vireos, West Indian whistling ducks, magnificent frigate birds, white tailed tropic birds, rose breasted grosbeak, West Indian woodpecker.
