Guadeloupe Islands Wildlife & Marine Life
Guadeloupe Islands wildlife
The limited Guadeloupe Islands wildlife might not get a lot of publicity, but the French Caribbean Guadeloupe Islands did gain considerable publicity, with the Brits in particular, because of the popular UK television series “Death in Paradise” which was filmed in, and showcased, beautiful Guadeloupe.
As mentioned above, animal life is very limited in Guadeloupe – the islands were reportedly over-hunted long ago. The Lesser Antillean iguana, endemic to the Lesser Antilles, is protected. The Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin Nature Reserve is home to seventeen different mammal species in all – these include the raccoon, several bat species, mongoose, and the endangered agouti.
Birds of the Guadeloupe Islands
33 species of birds (17 endemic to the Lesser Antilles) have been recorded on the island including the Guadeloupe black woodpecker (pic noir), pelican, pigeon, hummingbird, thrush, frigate bird, partridge, flycatcher, Antillean Nighthawk, warbler, Lesser Antillean Macaw, Monk Parakeet, black-rump Waxhill, water fowl, wild ducks, American oystercatcher, ruddy turnstone, little tern. To find out more about birds in the region generally, go to the Caribbean Birdwatching & Birds page in the Caribbean Leisure Activities section.
