St Kitts wildlife

Regretfully St Kitts wildlife, as on its sister island Nevis, is not impressive. St Kitts & Nevis, officially named “The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis”, are very close to each other geographically and have virtually the same wildlife and marine life.

Wildlife consists of donkeys, cows, goats, black-bellied sheep, deer, mongooses, several species of bat, deer (St Kitts), and vervet monkeys – introduced to the island by settlers. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, away from the developed areas of the island, is a good time to see these green vervet monkeys.

St Kitts & Nevis birds

A total of 203 different bird species have been recorded in St Kitts & Nevis. Amongst them are the Antillean crested hummingbird, pelican, waders, cinnamon teal, yellow warbler, Caribbean coots, green heron, Wilsons plover,  little blue heron,  great egret, green throated Carib hummingbird, American kestrel,  Caribbean Elania, black tern,  black whiskered vireo,  and shiney cowbird…  Also St Kitts have recorded the magnificent frigatebird, pied-billed grebe, greater flamingo, blue winged teal, red-tailed hawk, osprey, several species of plover, sandpiper (spotted, semi-palmated), several species of gull and doves.
