US Virgin Islands wildlife

The variety of US Virgin Islands wildlife (USVI) on land is not great but you will find hundreds of bird species, giant iguanas, and a colourful and varied marine life.

The USVI consist of three very different islands – St Thomas, St Croix and St John – plus a multitude of islets. St John is not as developed as its sister islands but features a national park which covers more than half of its land area.

Lizards

On land you’ll find a variety of lizards and frogs as well as dragon lookalikes – iguanas.

Iguanas

On St Thomas, a bustling touristy island, the giant iguanas can be seen strutting across roads, sitting in trees and in bushes. Adult iguanas grow up to 6ft long – the tail is around half their total length and, if surprised, they use it as a self-protective weapon.

Wild donkeys

There are also mongooses, white-tailed deer, bats, hermit crabs, goats and wild donkeys (on St John).

USVI birds

As for birdlife, 230+ species of birds have been recorded… pelicans, herons, egrets, bananaquits and hummingbirds are among them. To find out more about birds in the region generally, go to the Caribbean Birdwatching & Birds page in the Caribbean Leisure Activities section.

Marine life in the USVI

The marine life of the USVI is far more varied than wildlife on land. There are different turtle species including the Leatherback, Hawksbill and Green turtle, and hundreds of different fish species. These include surgeon fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, puffer fish, wrasses, squirrel fish, grouper, angel fish, jacks and barracuda.

You’ll also find stingrays on sandy patches on the sea floor near reefs and, if you’re lucky, spot delicate tiny seahorses floating by.

At the beginning of the year, generally from January until March, there are whale-spotting boat trips to see humpback whales that visit the area during winter months to the north of the Virgin Islands.
