Cuba in a nutshell
Cuba is a diverse, and the largest, island in the Caribbean and it offers a kaleidoscope of landscapes – mountains, valleys, tobacco plantations, sugar cane plantations, beautiful beaches, semi-deserts, tropical rainforests, and seven fascinating cities that date from the 15th century. There are more than 300 beaches and more than 4,000 cayos and islets, as well as four impressive mountain ranges. The highest peak is Turquino at 6,476ft (the Sierra Maestra range). The capital, Havana, is lively and Old Havana seductive with its timeworn streets, vintage cars, and atmospheric bars playing traditional Cuban music. Cuba has a captivating past and the cities’ colonial architecture reflects this.
Cuba is a large country, and long and narrow, so don’t expect to cover everything on one vacation. The island is around 745 miles long and 130 miles wide at its widest point (just 20 miles wide at its narrowest point). There are six UNESCO declared world biosphere reserves and over 300 protected areas.
