Curaçao in a nutshell
Located off the Venezuela coast, Curacao is the ‘C’ part of the ABC islands (Aruba and Bonaire being the others). The island measures around 38 miles long and 7 miles wide. The capital is Willemstad, the people a real melting pot – there are more than 50 nationalities on the island – and the landscape, flora and fauna are very diverse. There are some awesome landscapes in the lesser known parts of the island.
The island is outside the hurricane belt, but on a number of occasions has been affected by tropical storms as hurricanes build up in the region. The dry season is from January to September. The island is dry so cacti and acacia thrive here, and the terrain is hilly. In the north west the coastline is rugged, but there are sheltered bays in the south east. Under water there are colourful fish and reefs so the island is a popular Caribbean diving spot.
Why visit Curaçao
There are excellent hiking opportunities on the island and the diving is first-rate. There are unusual small museums and picturesque towns with attractive Dutch colonial architecture. The island makes a good Caribbean vacation choice for families – there are sheltered bays on the west coast and lovely beaches on the southern coast, as well as lots of things for kids to do.
While you’re in Curaçao
Go on a guided history walk or architectural tour of Willemstad to discover its attractive and colourful Dutch colonial-style buildings. Explore the Hato Caves to see the stalagmites and stalactites, and if you’re a nature lover don’t miss a visit to the Christoffel National Park. There are lots of different restaurants on the island, the nightlife is lively, and there are boutique shops as well as duty free zones for shopping.
