Honduras, Roatan & the Bay Islands in a nutshell
Honduras is a big country which offers diverse adventures, activities, and wildlife – and travelling in the country is not expensive. It is worth noting that while there are plenty of mainland adventure activities to attract you to this fascinating country, it does have some safety issues – so, be wise, and carefully check your own Government’s travel warnings and advice before travelling to Honduras.
Honduras, which borders both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, has a 435 mile long Caribbean coastline mainland. The country sits within the Caribbean hurricane belt. The rainy season on the Caribbean coast runs from September to January and inland from May to November. Honduras is bordered by Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador, has coastal lowlands, inland rugged highlands, and river valleys and plains on the Caribbean coast. Honduras boasts the second longest barrier reef in the world so the undersea life is rich.
Several islands in the Caribbean Sea fall under the control of Honduras. The main ‘Caribbean’ Bay Islands (Islas de la Bahia) are Roatan, the most popular island with the best hotels, and the largest island at 35 miles long and four miles wide; Utila Island (reasonable prices), Guanaja (less developed than the other islands), and Cayos Cochinos (excellent dive sites). Rainy season is from September to January.
Why visit Honduras, Roatan & the Bay Islands
Having the world’s second longest barrier reef you will find excellent Scuba diving opportunities, especially around the Bay Islands where whale sharks visit annually. Honduras (mainland) is a birding paradise and the country has a rich diversity of wildlife. Travelling in Hondurars is not expensive.
While you’re in Honduras, Roatan & the Bay Islands
If you’re a nature lover and up for a real adventure, there’s an unspoilt UNESCO World Heritage site tucked away inland – it is La Moskitia Rainforest. The Copan Mayan ruins are extraordinary – they are located in western Honduras. Ziplining is a must if you’re staying on Roatan Island, as is Scuba diving around the Bay Islands. If you don’t snorkel or Scuba dive… then think about learning here.
