Jamaica in a nutshell
Tropical Jamaica is the 5th largest island in the Caribbean (146 miles long by 21-52 miles wide) which spreads over a lush 4,200 mountainous square miles – the Blue Mountain boasts the highest peak (7,402ft).
The island is located around 120 miles west of the dual-nation state of Haiti and the Dominican Republic (Hispaniola), and 90 miles to the south of Cuba; Kingston is the capital city.
Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and Jamaican jerk spice are both relished worldwide. The best beaches in Jamaica are on the western coast, Negril Beach (aka Seven Mile Beach) is one of Jamaica’s most beautiful white sand beaches.
The north-east coastline is rugged, the north coast features white sand beaches, the south coast features black sand beaches with a limestone cliff backdrop, and inland in the south-west area there are broad plains mostly filled with swamplands.
Why visit Jamaica
Jamaica is one of the friendliest islands in the Caribbean… Jamaicans seem to be always smiling, the white sand beaches are gorgeous, and the cuisine is delicious.
The all-inclusive resorts offer value for money, the luxury hotels really are, you can party all night long if you want in the main tourist areas and, in the Montego Bay area, you can play golf on a cluster of four superb Jamaica golf courses.
While you’re in Jamaica
A visit to the Pelican Bar is a must-do if you visit the Westmoreland parish of Jamaica, it’s a fun experience. To reach the rickety bar in the sea which has been constructed from driftwood you’ll have to drive or get a taxi to the nearest beach and get a boat out with a local skipper. Your hotel will be able to give you instructions on the bar’s location and how to get there.
Visit the Blue Hole, hidden in the Ocho Rios hills – the falls are not commercialised and it’s a serene haven if you want to get away from the bustling tourist area below.
