Will this Caribbean destination suit the adventurer in you?

This Martinique Adventure Activities Travel Guide is essential reading for anyone planning to visit the country for an active Caribbean vacation. We hope it will help you decide if this destination suits the adventurer in you.

Martinique in a nutshell

Can you imagine the luxury of a piece of sophisticated and gourmet France being located in the Caribbean? Well, it is, this little piece of heaven is Martinique. As well as volcanic mountains, tropical rainforests, exotic flowers, black and white beaches, small picturesque villages and plantations of pineapples and bananas, you’ll find hypermarkets, noisy traffic, sidewalk cafés and a bustling capital (Fort-de-France) – which gets over-run with cruise passengers when cruise ships make their port of call.

Martinique is a mountainous island, 40 miles by 19 miles (at its longest and widest), with some gentle hills, and many good hiking trails – both in the rainforest and along the coastline. Martinique is a very fertile island and is known for its plants and flowers. The island boasts 80 species of palms and around 3,500 plants.

Why visit Martinique

If you’re looking for a Caribbean destination that is a little unusual and promises plenty of adventures, stunning beaches, chic shops and gourmet food, then Martinique is for you.

While you’re in Martinique

Wander the narrow streets of Fort-de-France, the island’s capital; spend time on the gorgeous Plages des Salines, visit the beautiful botanical gardens of Le Jardin de Balata, take a tour to the peaceful east coast, and don’t miss out on the popular local tipple, Ti-Punch – a heady mix of white rum, cane syrup and lemon rind. If you are travelling in the south west of the island, go to see the twenty white stone statues which stand on a hill facing Diamond Beach – it’s a moving experience. The statues honour many passengers, sailors and slaves, who died when the slave ship they were on sank in 1830.
