St Eustatius (Statia) in a nutshell
A very small and volcanic island, St Eustatius (also known as Statia) is located in the Lesser Antilles (northern), and covers an area of 11 square miles. Oranjestad is its only town. There are volcanoes at each end of the island and a low plain in between. The rugged coastline is mainly made up of steep cliffs with just one sandy beach at one end (north east) and one rocky beach at the other end (south-east). The highest volcano point reaches a height of 2,000ft – this is the Quill – it has a lush rainforest at its peak in a huge crater.
