Will this Caribbean destination suit the adventurer in you?
This St Kitts Adventure Activities Travel Guide is essential reading for anyone planning to visit the country for an active Caribbean vacation. We hope it will help you decide if this destination suits the adventurer in you.
St Kitts in a nutshell
St Kitts is a scenic unspoilt Caribbean island in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, and is very close to its sister, Nevis. The official name of the twin island country is “The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis” but, although so close to each other, the islands are quite different. St Kitts & Nevis are the oldest British colonies in the Caribbean. You can hop over from St Kitts to Nevis by plane but, quite frankly, with such a short ferry ride it’s just not worth it (the islands are less than two miles apart).
Covering an area of 68 square miles, friendly St Kitts offers a range of volcanic mountains, rainforest, a bustling capital (Basseterre) and a rich history. The island is around 18 miles long and five miles across at its widest. There are three groups of volcanic peaks, and the highest, Mt Liamuiga (which is dormant), reaches to approximately 3,793ft.
The best beaches are located on the dry peninsula in the south so, as they attract the tourists, it is also the liveliest spot on the island. However, away from this area, Frigate Bay, and the capital Basseterre, you’ll find sleepy villages and plantation inns dotted over hills that were once full of sugar cane. There is an impressive 18th century fort (the largest built in the Eastern Caribbean) in the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which offers far reaching views from its battlements. Basseterre has a cruise ship terminal so when the large ships make their port of call the capital’s streets throng with tourists.
Why visit St Kitts
St Kitts is an unspoilt island and not as developed as some other Caribbean islands. There are elegant plantation inns and classy accommodation to stay in, as well as some excellent restaurants and eating places dotted around the island. Take advantage of St Kitts and Nevis being so near each other if you’ve got the time and budget, and share your stay in the Caribbean between the two islands, they have a completely different feel about them – but both unspoilt. With two golf courses on St Kitts, plus one superb course in Nevis (and another in progress), St Kitts & Nevis are now an emerging golf vacation destination.
While you’re in St Kitts
Go ziplining in the rainforest, visit Brimstone Hill Fortress, take a walk around Basseterre, join a turtle night patrol, and take the scenic trip on the Sugar Train. Party on The Strip at Frigate Bay (it’s lively) where there is open-air dancing, a roaring bonfire, live bands, fire-eating, and Kititian food to enjoy. Treat yourself to a long lunch at one of the island’s elegant plantation inns, so relaxing. And definitely take the ferry across to charming Nevis, hire a bike for the day and explore the island on deserted roads.
