Modern Cancun, tailor-made for tourism, boasts 14 miles of white sand beaches on the south-east coast of Mexico. The area enjoys sunshine throughout the year with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees centigrade (68 degrees Fahrenheit) in October to as high as 33 degrees centigrade (92 degrees Fahrenheit) April-September. Isla Mujeres is just off the Cancun coast and is renowned for its diving and snorkelling.
The Riviera May sits on the north east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, is known for its extensive all-inclusive resorts and underground water systems. The rainy season is during September and October; the landscape is flat with low tropical rainforest, and the coastline is a mix of rocky inlets and crescent-shaped beaches. The Mayan Underworld – the underground river and cave system – is extensive: one of the explored underwater limestone caverns stretches, twists and turns as far as 95 miles. There are thought to be around seven thousand cenotes (flooded sink holes) in the Yucatán Peninsula.
