Caribbean Land Activities
Caribbean land activities and adventures are various, whether on wheels or on foot
Head inland to discover lesser-known Caribbean land activities
There is a good choice of land-based Caribbean adventure activities to choose from in Caribbean rainforests and Central American jungles. Caribbean land activities include 4×4 off-road jeep excursions, mountain biking, horseback riding, Segway tours, guided hiking, caving and climbing.
Caribbean triathlons & swimming events
Many islands organise their own triathlon and/or swimming events. Caribbean land activities are not just for adults either – there are many destinations where you’ll find plenty of family adventure vacation activities.
Caribbean mountain biking and cycling tours
Mountain biking can be as energetic or as gentle as you wish and are one of the most popular Caribbean land activities. You can discover ‘hidden’ Barbados by bike on a guided tour. Be driven up the Blue Mountain in Jamaica, collect a bike at the top then freewheel down, stopping for lunch or a cup of famed Blue Mountain coffee. For advanced bikers wanting a challenging ride, try a biking holiday in St Lucia where you’ll find steep up-hills and tight switchbacks.
The unspoilt island of Nevis, because of lack of traffic, is perfect not only for leisurely biking and family cycling, but also excellent for serious bikers. Many different bikes are available for hire in Nevis so all the family can be catered for. The roads are quiet, there are some lovely biking trails, and bike tours can be guided or you can go it alone.
The Nevis Triathlon is getting increasingly popular too, as are other Caribbean triathlons held on many islands. For more information on which islands organise triathlons in the Caribbean go to the dedicated Caribbean Triathlons Events page.
Caribbean caving and climbing
For adventure enthusiasts, there are other Caribbean land activities for additional thrills. Caving and canyoning destinations in the Caribbean include Puerto Rico, Belize, the Yucatán Peninsula (which has particularly amazing underground cenotes (sink holes) to explore), and the Dominican Republic which also offers climbing opportunities, as does Cayman Brac which has a 140ft limestone rock formation to climb. Canyoning in the Caribbean is covered in the River Activities section.
Jamaica has many underground caves, but always explore with an experienced guide. There are also easy-going ‘tourist-friendly’ caves in the Caribbean to discover with guided tours – in Trinidad & Tobago, Aruba, Anguilla, Barbados and the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.
Caribbean horseback riding
Horseback riding on beaches and exploring inland is another activity on the favourite Caribbean land activities list. Explore St Maarten on horseback, and discover hidden St Lucia on a horseback riding tour – the views are scenic. There are good beaches throughout the Caribbean for horse riding, but the sandy beaches of the Cayman Islands and the Turks & Caicos Islands are particularly good. Be prepared to get wet though as the horses love being in the water.
Many Caribbean resorts offer horseback riding on their doorstep – you’ll find resorts in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay in Jamaica and Puerto Rico (Fajardo). Most of the islands offer a combined ride and swim experience. There are also several horse riding ranches on the French Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Go to the Caribbean Horseback Riding section to find out more.
Caribbean Segway tours
Segway tours are particularly popular Caribbean land activities with cruise ship passengers when they arrive at their ports of call. Segway tour operators will meet cruise ships with the Segways, as they do in St Kitts for instance. Segway tour trails vary on different islands – there are beach excursions, city tours and plantation estate tours depending on which island you visit. Visit the Segway & Off-Road 4×4 section for details.
4×4 off-road excursions combined with other Caribbean land activities
Explore your Caribbean destination’s back roads and go off-road in a 4×4 jeep, off-road truck, or self-drive Hummer. You can also combine other Caribbean land activities with off-road experiences… such as ziplining or catamaran sailing, and even bobsledding through the rainforest.
