Caribbean half-iron distance triathlon
A half-iron distance triathlon – the Antigua & Barbuda Tinman Rohr Triathlon – is held every year in Antigua. First launched in 2012 it now offers a great environment for the challenging 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run. In St John try a different challenge… triathlon, aquathon and SUPathon.
The main Caribbean triathlon image on this page was taken at the Nevis Triathlon which, year on year, is gaining recognition, getting stronger – especially as professional triathlete and multiple Ironman World Champion, Chris McCormack, aka “Macca”, has teamed up with the Nevis Tourism Authority and the St Kitts & Nevis Triathlon Federation. They have now officially launched the Macca X Nevis International Triathlon.
This is what Jane Hansom, Ladies winner of the 2013 Macca X Nevis International Triathlon, told Active Caribbean about the event:
“I participated in the 2013 MaccaX Nevis triathlon and it was a fabulous experience. First and foremost, racing against Chris McCormack (Macca) an Ironman world champion was brilliant and such an exciting challenge. The swim is amazing, the water was warm (so no need for wetsuits) and it’s so clear you can see the fish, I even saw a turtle! The bike leg is also great fun, twice around the island spotting monkeys and goats. Including a 5k climb up Anaconda hill which really gets the legs going. The run was lined with enthusiastic locals shouting support which adds to the atmosphere and really keeps you going in the heat. All in all a fab event.”
Mountain biking in the Caribbean islands is pleasurable and scenic – whether you are a serious biker wanting a challenging route or a casual cyclist who enjoys a gentle ride through country villages or along the sea shore. If you are taking a cruise in the West Indies you’ll also find that many Caribbean cruise ships offer half-day or full day biking excursions at Caribbean ports of call.
Caribbean resorts often have bikes to hire on-site and if not they will help arrange for a Caribbean bike hire company to deliver and collect a bike to your Caribbean hotel for the day, with a cycling guide or without, if you’re happy to go it alone. Go to Caribbean Mountain Biking in this Land Activities section to read more about biking and cycling opportunities throughout the Caribbean.
